Microdermabrasion for Acne Scars
WHAT CAUSES ACNE SCARS
The cause for acne scars is when a build-up of sebum blocks the pores in the skin. Sebum is a substance naturally produced by the oil glands in your skin that helps to eliminate dead skin cells by transporting them to the skin’s surface via the follicles. When acne disappears, it may actually leave scars behind, which can take awhile to fade. Another way to exacerbate the condition is to ‘pop’ your pimples, spreading the infection around and leaving more unsightly scars on the skin.
HOW IT WORKS
Labelled an instantaneous facelift by some, microdermabrasion is a much more effective method compared to other invasive procedures, which can often be more costly as well. It utilises rough, tiny grains to exfoliate the surface if your skin, which scrapes off dead skin cells to reveal a fresh layer of new skin below. However, it does not affect the deeper layers of skin, as this may be harmful as well as potentially embedding the tiny grains!
A specialised tool will be used during the procedure, with the crystal grains aimed at the outlined treatment area. Exfoliating the skin, these grains eliminate dead skin cells on the surface. This treatment is also less aggressive than regular dermabrasion, so no anaesthetic required as it is not painful.
Some clinical studies have also suggested that regular microdermabrasion sessions may even get your skin accustomed to growing new skin cells at a quicker rate, which helps to bring healthy skin cells to the surface faster than usual. This may also help to reduce the deep blemishes in your skin over time.
POST-TREATMENT
Your skin will be pink or reddish after the procedure, but you can resume your daily activities without any concern. A sensation similar to mild sunburn may be experienced over the next 24 hours, and it is advisable to use moisturiser and avoid make-up during this time. You should also avoid sun exposure for the next few days, as well as applying moisturiser regularly to ensure you skin remains hydrated.
Your doctor will recommend a suitable number of sessions to get the best results, and will continually offer advice on ways to maintain your skin’s freshness. Depending on your skin’s condition, each treatment will be spaced out differently, but you should notice your skin’s healthier appearance and radiance following each session.
