Microdermabrasion for Pigmentation
WHAT CAUSES PIGMENTATION?
When your skin suffers from too much sun exposure, it automatically begins to produce melanin to protect itself against the UV rays that can be harmful. Unfortunately, pigmentation may begin to develop when too much melanin is produced in a single area which can lead to dark, visible patches on the skin. Although it is not harmful at all, some people may seek treatment for it if they deem it unsightly. Acne, skin inflammation, hormonal changes and picking at your skin can also cause this to occur, as well as some medication / antibiotics.
HOW IT WORKS
Some people have called microdermabrasion an instant facelift as it tends to be much more effective than other procedures, which may also be more expensive and invasive! Tiny crystal grains are used to exfoliate the skin’s surface – this eliminates dead skin cells and reveals a fresh layer of skin underneath. It will not affect lower skin layers, as the tiny grains may become embedded in the skin if so!
Utilising a special tool, the doctor will aim the tiny grains at the outlined area, which will have been pre-determined during the first consultation session. As it scrubs the skin, these grains eliminate dead skin cells. The procedure is not as rough as traditional dermabrasion, which means no anaesthetic is required during the session.
Some studies have indicated that it may be beneficial to undergo regular sessions of microdermabrasion as it is thought that it boosts the production of newer and healthier skin cells. as a result, the new layer of skin will be revealed more quickly, which might also reduce other blemishes on your skin over time.
POST-TREATMENT
You can expect your skin to be pink of reddish after the session, but you can resume your daily activities without any problems. Over the next 24 hours, you may experience a sensation similar to mild sunburn, and it is advisable not to apply any make-up during this time. You should also avoid any sun exposure for the next few days, and be sure to use moisturiser regularly.
The optimum number of sessions will depend on your skin condition and desired outcome, and your doctor will recommend a suitable number as well as offering advice on how to keep your skin healthy and fresh. After each session, the improvement should be noticeable.
