Blueberries – The Not So Secret Super Fruit

by | Dec 19, 2014

Hi everyone, the weekend is nearly upon us and I hope you have all had a healthy and productive week so far. For this week’s topic of super food, I would like to draw attention to a fruit – the delightfully named and flavoured blueberry. You may have had them before in a pie or as a cake topping, but did you know that blueberries have plenty of nutritional value as well?

What Do Blueberries Offer?
Your body needs an assortment of anti-oxidants to maintain its health, and blueberries contain a wide variety of these. Studies have shown that blueberries contain anti-oxidants that are relevant to your whole body, including the cardiovascular and nervous systems. There is also evidence that supports the idea that muscles damaged by strenuous exercise or activities can be reduced through the consumption of blueberries!

High in Vitamin C and K
Blueberries are also high in Vitamin C and K which are important nutrients required by your body. Vitamin K helps to reduce the risk of osteoporosis as it strengthens the bones, and also prevents tooth decay. It has also been shown that vitamin K helps to lower the possibility of prostate, lung and liver cancer.

Vitamin C helps to buff up your immune system, prevent heart disease and is also beneficial for your eyes. A strong immune system helps to lower stress levels, ensuring that you are more prepared to tackle everyday challenges. In addition, Vitamin C helps your skin appearance, reducing the chances of wrinkles and dryness – this ensures that your skin ages well over time and does not look unsightly.

Improves Your Memory
The midnight blue of blueberries are actually caused by flavonoids, which very few people have heard of. It is actually a natural compound which has a positive effect on your memory! This is because it offers protection for your neurons against the effects of inflammation and oxidation.

As a natural anti-oxidant, it is no wonder that blueberries help to preserve your memory, a notion that has also been backed up with scientific research. Results have also suggested that the nerve cell protection offered by blueberries helps to maintain the cognitive functions in the body which helps them to run smoothly.

Good for Diabetics?
Maintaining a ba-lanced blood sugar level is often the biggest challenge facing individuals diagnosed with diabetes. This is where blueberries come in; they have been shown to regulate blood sugar favourably which can be highly beneficial to those facing problems with blood sugar levels running low or spiking too high.

Furthermore, blueberries can be kept for a very long time without compromising its anti-oxidants. Researchers have found that keeping blueberries frozen between 3 to 6 months barely affects the level of anti-oxidants, meaning that you can buy them in bulk and only consume them when you want, keeping them in the freezer until then. Talk about convenience!

All in all, blueberries are highly beneficial to your overall health so adding them to you diet certainly wouldn’t hurt. However, like all super foods, this is not a one size fits all solution for your health and should not be consumed in lieu of other foods that your body needs. Fruits alone will not be able to sustain your body if it is not supplemented with foods from other categories, so be sensible and ensure that your diet is well balanced. There is a wealth of information out there; you just need to go and find it.

Until next time, eat healthy and stay happy!
