According to Malaysian AIDS Foundation, since it’s first case in 1986, there are over 98,089 cases of HIV/AIDS recorded in Malaysia, with 18,827 cases of death
(source: https://www.mac.org.my/v3/resources/hiv-statistics/).
This alarming number is increasing every year, making HIV/AIDS one of the most feared infectious disease not only in Malaysia, but also in the whole world.
Eversince it’s debut, people always associated HIV/AIDS with death threats. True, HIV/AIDS has no cure yet, but thanks to modern discovery, there are medicines that can help with to prevent HIV infections to those who may have been exposed to HIV threats recently.
WHAT IS PEP?
PEP or Post-Exposure Prophylaxis is a combination of antiretroviral medicines (ART) to help protect yourself from the HIV virus. For those who are already contracted with HIV virus, ART medicines is the one opportunity for them to live as a normal person without having to deal with the symptoms of HIV/AIDS. It is not a cure for HIV/AIDS but it keeps the virus under control as it strengthens your antibody to fight off the virus and prevent it from multiplying in your body.
PEP is a combination of TENVIR-EM and Efavir tablets, two of the most effective ART medicines in it’s retrospect. Although they are both classified under the same segmentation, Tenvir-EM and Efavir are completely different medications with different purposes. Tenvir-EM contains Emtricitabine and Tenofovir disoproxil fumarate (Tenofovir DF) increases immunity resistance against the virus. At the same time, Efavir helps in keeping the virus under control by preventing the virus from multiplying with Efavirenz.
IS PEP A MUST FOR ME?
If you are potentially being exposed to any HIV threats in the last 3 days, it’s best if you could consume PEP as soon as possible. PEP is best used in the span of 72 hours after being exposed to HIV viruses. If you are one of the following, kindly contact us to arrange a consultation with our doctors so we can help you curb the problem:
- You are HIV negative or unknown
- You think you might have a sexual contact with HIV patient
- You are involved in needle – sharing with someone with positive or unknown HIV status
- You were sexually assaulted or has had an unfortunate blood transfer

PEP is an effective crisis control measure to help curb the symptoms and virus infections. It is not 100% guaranteed, but it is good enough to keep your body tough throughout the critical time. We would still recommend you to practice the necessary precautions against the virus such as using condoms, avoid needle-sharing, and avoid any blood transfer from unauthorised health practitioners.
If you are constantly exposed to the threats of HIV, you might want to consider using PrEP (Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis) instead. (https://premier-clinic.com/prep-hiv-prevention/)
HOW SHOULD I CONSUME PEP?
PEP should be consumed within 72 hours after the exposure to HIV/AIDS. It’s best to take it as soon as possible as every second counts. After being prescribed, you must take it minimum 1 or 2 daily for 28 days consecutively.
DOES PEP CAUSE ANY SIDE EFFECTS?
PEP is known to cause nausea effects to some people, but it is very mild and easily treatable. Kindly contact us if you have such problem after consuming PEP.
