Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) for Acne
WHAT CAUSES ACNE?
A common skin condition during puberty, acne is a skin disorder that also affects adults of both genders. It develops when the skin’s pores are clogged up by a build-up of oil, which is originally produced by oil glands connected to follicles. Known as sebum, the natural liquid helps to get rid of dead skin cells and when this blocks the pores of the skin, this results in pimples forming and growing.
A large percentage (approximately 75%) of individuals aged 11 to 30 will have experienced acne at least once before. Younger males tend to be more prone to acne outbreaks due to the larger amounts of testosterone in their bodies, which can exacerbate the condition.
WHAT IS PRP THERAPY?
Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) therapy is also known as ‘Vampire’ or ‘Dracula’ therapy, and is a procedure which draws blood from the patients, just like that of a blood test. The extracted blood is then placed in a special machine that works to separate the platelets, blood cells and serum. This is then re-injected into the specific body area to be treated or rejuvenated.
With the platelets releasing growth factors, this helps the body repair itself naturally as the skin cells will be triggered into generating new skin tissue. This should also improve your skin tone and the rate of collagen production. As a result, skin will grow back appearing much more healthy and vibrant.
The recommended number of treatments is 2-3 sessions about 2 weeks apart, but this may vary depending on your condition and will be advised by your doctor.
RESULTS AND RECOVERY
Your skin should be noticeably smoother and firmer, and will continue to gradually improve in the coming months. Results tend to last for approximately 18 months, with top-up treatments required if you are to maintain the appearance of the skin.
Minimal swelling and bruising may be experienced, but these minor issues are not harmful and will subside within a week. Aside from that, almost no downtime is needed, with little risk of other side effects. This is because the treatment uses your own plasma for natural repair, making it an option that is highly effective and much safer than many other procedures.
