What Causes Dark Circles and Under Eye Bags?

Hi everyone, I hope you have all had a fantastic weekend and are rested and ready to tackle the coming week. For today’s topic, allow me to talk about dark circles and under eye bags, covering what they are and what may cause this problem.
What Are They?
Under eye bags occur when the skin underneath your eyes become puffy or swell up slightly. As the skin around your eyes is very sensitive due to it being thin, it does not take much for under eye bags to develop. Under eye bags and darks circles are also a very common occurrence as you get older.

In addition, aging can cause the tissue surrounding the eyes to weaken, which causes it to sag and droop. This may even include some of the facial muscles that support your eyelids. The regular fat that offers support to the eyes may then move into the lower eyelids since there is now room for it, while fluid may also gather in this space, which leads to the swelling.

However, there is no serious danger posed to your health as under eye bags and dark circles tend to be a cosmetic issue only, and only in extremely rare cases does it signify a potential health condition. You should see a doctor only if the swelling is severe and consistent, accompanied by pain or redness and itching, or if it affects other parts of the body.
What Causes It?
As touched on earlier, the structure of muscles and tissue that support your eyelids weaken as you get older, which is why under eye bags and dark circles begin to develop. There are several potential causes of this.
One of them is simply not getting enough rest or sleep, and a good night’s rest will often result in the swelling going down by the following day. Under eye bags may also run in the family; in this case you have no control over how frequently they appear, and can only take precautions to limit them as much as possible.

You may also begin to develop them due to fluid retention in the area underneath your eye as a result of changes in weather, such as hot and humid days, hormonal levels, or even eating goods that are heavy with salt.
How Can I Treat It?
You can try using a cool compress, such as a washcloth or small towel soaked in cold water, before applying mild pressure it around the eye area for several minutes. Other simple methods include sleeping 7-8 hours a night and sleeping with your head slightly raised to prevent fluid accumulation.
