Why is Lettuce Good for You?
Hi all, hope everyone had a lovely Valentine’s Day and hopefully the week ahead has great things in store. For today’s topic, I want to talk about the simple lettuce and the great benefits that it brings. We all know about lettuce and how it is an ever present in salads and other dishes. But what exactly is it good for? Read on to find out more!
Health Benefits of Lettuce
It has been labelled the perfect food to help you lose weight, or even rabbit food in some quarters, but the humble lettuce actually has a variety of tangible health benefits. For instance, it only has a low glycemic index of 15, but since its calorie count is so low, it is considered as zero. Individuals looking out for foods with a low glycemic index often need to watch their blood sugar level or are looking to lose weight, making lettuce the perfect ingredient for them.

There are several types of lettuce out there, with the most common one being iceberg lettuce. This is the lettuce that you commonly see in salads, sandwiches, burgers – more or less any dishes that uses lettuce as an ingredient. However, of all the lettuces, it actually has the lowest nutritional value. Romaine lettuce contains less sugar and sodium, two times as much protein and calcium, and contains a much, much larger proportion of iron and vitamin A, C and K!

Apart from helping weight loss, lettuce is also full of fibre which helps your digestive system work more smoothly. The fibre also eliminates bile salts from your body, which breaks down cholesterol in order to replace them – this is great for your heart! The vitamin C and beta-carotene also aid the prevention of cholesterol oxidation, which prevents plaque from building up.
Benefits for the Body
Not only is lettuce good for your health, it is also beneficial to your body in several ways. Did you know that it can help cure insomnia? This is due to the lactucarium within the lettuce helping to induce sleepiness and relaxation in your body. This is found when the leaves are broken or cut, and it has been shown that its properties are similar to that of opium!

It also helps to keep your skin radiant and healthy due to the presence of vitamin A, C and E. As a rich source of vitamin A, you only need six leaves to fulfil your daily quota, and it increases the generation of new cells, resulting in your skin being revitalised. Vitamin E also offers protection against the UV rays of the sun, as well as lowering the possibility of developing cataracts and macular degeneration.
In addition, you don’t even have to consume lettuce to enjoy its benefits. Lettuce compresses can help combat various skin conditions; by boiling lettuce in water, the liquid can then be used as a compress for your face or other body parts, and can help to reduce the presence of acne and psoriasis. Talk about a super food!
There are far more benefits that come from lettuce; more than I can write about here. It might well be a smart choice to start adding lettuce to your regular diet from now on! Till next time, stay healthy!
