Why You Have Acne and How to Treat It

by | Dec 10, 2014

Hi everyone, hope you are having a great week thus far. Today I will tackle a subject that affects many people across the world – acne.
It is a common skin condition that most individuals have experienced at one point or another, with studies estimating this figure at about 75%. It can affect both males and females at any age from puberty onwards; however it is more common during puberty due to hormones known as androgens or even hormonal imbalance during adulthood.
What is Acne?
Acne consists of multiple pimples concentrated in a single area and occurs when a build-up of sebum takes place inside clogged pores. These pores are connected to the oil glands through follicles – small passageways that are generally used to remove dead skin cells from the body. When the oil glands produce sebum and the follicles are blocked, a pimple begins to form and slowly becomes visible to the naked eye.

Although there is a strong correlation between acne and puberty, it is still not fully understood what the root cause of acne is, and there are several potential reasons why you may experience it:
  • During a menstrual cycle
  • Climates that tend to be hot and humid
  • Hormonal changes during pregnancy
  • Oily/greasy hair or oil-based makeup
  • Genetically susceptible via genetics

How Do I Control the Acne?
Here’s a few things you can do to control or avoid exacerbating the condition of your acne:

Cleanse your skin thoroughly
It is best to do this twice daily and be sure to use a soap or facial wash that is suitable for your skin and contains the compound benzoyl peroxide. Use warm water during washing.

Avoid touching your face
This will spread the germs and may possibly make the acne worse. Of course you’ll have to touch your face at some point, but do try to minimise the contact between your hands and face, and try to ensure that your hands are clean before doing so.

Do not pop your pimples
Although it is tempting, this is one of the worst things you can do! This will cause the skin to swell and become red, leaving a very obvious mark which will turn into an unsightly scar. The chance of the infection spreading is also high.

Keep hair out of your face
As sebum will collect on your hair, it is best to keep it out of your face and to wash it regularly. Many individuals with hair falling on their face often experience acne on the forehead and in the area between the cheeks and ears.

In the future, I will analyse and look at several aesthetic procedures that are useful for treating serious acne. These are professional treatments which can be an option if you cannot get rid of acne naturally or if it continues to stubbornly persist, but hopefully these simple tips will help you keep your acne under control before it gets out of hand.
