What is Bioidentical Hormones Replacement Therapy?
In my previous post, I explored the problem of low thyroid hormones, also known as hypothyroidism. Click here to read the original post.
One of the methods that can be used to treat hypothyroidism is the relatively new treatment known as bioidentical hormone replacement. Not limited to low thyroid hormones, this technique can also treat a variety of other health conditions and it is a safe procedure.
Breaking Down the Method
Also known as natural hormone therapy, the technique aims to address hormonal deficiencies in our body. As the body continues to age, it slowly loses the ability to produce various hormones which leads to aging, hypothyroidism or other conditions that are linked to lower hormone levels.
What this technique does is introduce replacement hormones to the body – these are compounds similar to the molecular structure of the hormones produced by the body. By replicating these naturally produced hormones, these replacements act as substitutes for the hormones that the body lacks due to the slower rate of production. This in turn alleviates the conditions or ailments that affect the body. It has one simple task – to increase the level of hormones that are lacking in the body, and since it is similar to the naturally produced hormones, it is safe as the body will accept and treat it like natural, regular hormones.

There are many types of replacement hormones available depending on your condition, and your doctor will usually prescribe them only if required.
Pills or Creams?
Depending on the type of hormone needed, administration of bioidentical hormone replacements can come in the form of various skin patches, topical gels, vaginal or skin creams, or even a simple tablet. Although there are a myriad of products, you should look out for those that have been FDA-approved as these are subject to testing and monitoring.

If administered orally, these replacement hormones are usually modified by the liver before entering the body’s bloodstream. However, if it bypasses the digestive system (ie. through patches, creams or gels), it gets absorbed into the bloodstream directly and begins to address the hormonal imbalance. The dosage or method of administration will differ depending on the hormone or form, and it is crucial that the doctor’s advice is followed.
In addition, you should also keep in mind that not all patients are potential candidates for bioidentical hormone replacement therapy as medical history needs to be taken into account. In some cases, you may simply not be suitable for this treatment.

Should I Opt For This?
This is only a decision that can be made with the knowledge of what your body lacks, so I suggest that you schedule an appointment with a qualified doctor to fully diagnose and understand what you require. The symptoms that your body displays may be indicative of other health conditions! In addition, there may be other ways to address hormonal imbalance so do be sure that you’ve tried other recommended options before opting for this.
