How Important Is Mental Health to Your Well-being?
Hi everyone, I hope this week has continued to treat you well. Today’s topic focuses on a less emphasised topic, especially in Malaysia – mental health.
What is Mental Health?
According to mentalhealth.gov, the definition of the phrase is “our emotional, psychological and social well-being”. The state of our mental health can affect actions, thoughts and feelings and is a crucial part of development from our childhood years all the way through to adulthood.
Studies have shown that mental health is correlated to our physical health, with healthy individuals much more likely to be healthy mentally as well. Apart from this, resilience is a trait that is commonly found in people that are healthy in the mind, responding accordingly to challenges and trauma. Individuals with poor mental health are much more likely to react negatively to adversity and become affected by the challenges they face.

What Constitutes Being Mentally Healthy?
There are several signs that mental health experts and professionals have outlined as symptomatic of mental well-being. Here are just a select few:
- Contentment with life – You are innately happy in your current position and with your overall situation
- Resilience to adversity – You respond positively to any bumps or obstacles you face in your life
- Ability to balance out stress and emotions – You can deal with both sides of the coin without letting it affect your life or relationships
- Constant learning and adapting – You are always eager to improve your life through new experiences or picking up new skills
- High level of self-confidence – You are confident when interacting with people around you and are not fazed easily

Potential Symptoms of Mental Health Problems?
The signs of potential mental health issues are aplenty, with the negative focus on the topic having led to much research and study. Here are a few signs which could indicate a problem with your mental health:
- Sleeping disorders – Those with mental health issues may struggle to get a good night’s sleep, often for extended periods of time
- Feelings of hopelessness – This may be a potential combination of feelings of numbness or that nothing in life matters at all
- Regular mood swings – This may instigate verbal or physical confrontations with others, straining relationships in the process
- Alcohol or drug abuse – This can cause and even exacerbate mental health issues
- Negative thoughts that are constantly present – A low self-esteem, or even having thoughts about self-harm or harming others may be indicative of a deeper problem

Despite its relative obscurity, mental health is a subject that should be taken seriously by everyone. Physical health is more intricately linked to mental and emotional health that most people are aware of, making it doubly important to keep your body fit and healthy. Getting sufficient rest, a healthy and balanced diet and a regular exercise regime are important aspects that should never be neglected as the consequences can be two-fold.
