Acne – How You Can Treat Stubborn Pimples – Part 1

by | Dec 17, 2014

Hi everyone, I hope the week has been kind to all of you so far. For today’s topic, let me revisit the problem of acne. Last week, one of my posts offered some tips to prevent the spreading of acne – click here to read the original post.

Despite all these steps you can take to combat acne, some of you may still find it hard to get rid of them permanently. Rest assured that you are not the only one in this boat. Let me highlight some potential treatments you could opt for to tackle these annoying blemishes.

Dermaroller
This treatment is sometimes referred to as skin needling; as the name suggests, the roller uses a series of fine needles to create microscopic holes in the skin which trigger a healing response. This results in the production of collagen in the skin in order to repair itself, which increases the rate of growth of new skin cells.

The microneedles create microscopic channels which trigger healing in the skin (pic from thehospitalgroup.org)

During the procedure, a customised serum will be applied to address your specific skin needs. The microscopic holes created by the roller will close up fairly quickly so you shouldn’t need to worry about infections or other complications, leaving you with a fresh layer of skin to show the world after the treatment!

Subcision
For those of you not put off by invasive techniques, subcision may be a viable option to treat your acne. It uses a small needle inserted into your skin; this is then used to break up clumps of fibrous tissue that cause acne scarring. This tissue holds skin down, creating depressions and scars and generally preventing skin from healing properly.

Before and after subcision
By breaking up this tissue, your skin begins the healing process, and new skin cells will grow to cover up the gaps created by the needle. A local anaesthesia will be used to numb any pain or discomfort, and the treatment is usually fairly swift with some minor downtime required. You will usually require  at least 2-3 sessions in order to get the best results, but this may vary depending on your skin condition.

Skin Peel
Also known as chemical peel to some people, it is suitable for both males and females and is used to eliminate the top layers of skin – this is the layer where all the blemishes can be found. A peeling solution will get the ball rolling, causing the skin to peel off naturally. This will eliminate dead skin cells on the surface and reveal a healthier and more radiant layer of skin below.

Before and after skin peel

A light burning sensation may be experienced but this is not painful, and the peel strength and effects can be customised depending on your skin condition. You should see an improvement after each session, allowing you to assess its effectiveness.

Acne need not be a problem you live with forever; if they do not go away naturally and if they stubbornly persist despite all your efforts, seek treatment before it becomes worse.
